ESRA-GA/AL: News and Events

News Update:

April 1, 2008

Sweetie's finally found her 'forever' home.

I think Bob fell in love all over again, and frankly it was a toss-up who was more anxious to keep her - my brother or my father!  I'm attaching a couple of photos of Bob and his dog.

Sweetie will now go to live up on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia, with lots of new smells and interesting birds and animals to chase. Looking at her now, it's hard to believe what a sick little girl she was.  Many thanks to you, to Leslie Paulsen and to the team at Crabapple Knoll for helping to care for this lovely - and loving - dog.

Best,
Marilyn

Here is the latest news:

Annie - poor little Annie was turned in by her owners and adopted by one of our approved families. She was returned after about 3 weeks through no fault of her own. We had been processing several applications and one in particular happened to be a fit for her. It has been reported that she barks when left alone - her new Mom does not work and is home most of the time - what a perfect situation! She went to her new home yesterday, I checked in with them this morning and everyone in the family has fallen in love with her, she slept through the night, has been very obedient and gives them lots of love. Her Mom has already signed her up for training classes just in case the barking is an issue. As hard as we try to screen and match people and dogs, sometime things just do not work out - but I always believe that things happen for the best so now Annie has an even better home.

Charlotte - Charlotte was rescued with her sister Emily. Emily was adopted by Cindy Peterson in Atlanta in December. Charlotte found her new home in Jacksonville, FL. Her new Mom drove 8+ hours from Jacksonville to Quitman, Mississippi (a couple of weekends ago), spent the night, picked Charlotte up and then made the long trek back home. We almost had to delay her adoption - 2 days before her Mom was to get her - her foster Mom saw that the side of her face was very swollen. She had some kind of abcess that had to be opened up and cleaned out - then antibiotics and her wound had to be washed twice a day for the next 10 days. Luckily her new Mom is a nurse and felt very comfortable with all of that so the adoption continued! We just got an e-mail today that Charlotte is doing great - everyone loves her - and her wound is healing nicely. Charlotte loves to play ball with the older kids in the backyard. Charlotte even enticed her new Grandma to come out into the backyard in her wheelchair to watch her play.

Tom - Tom was one of the Spanish Fort dogs who was being fostered in Mississippi. An older couple in Atlanta spoke with the foster parents and decided Tom was just what they wanted. Tom is a very shy little boy without a lot of confidence. He seems to be adjusting to his new home but best of all, his new parents are very patient with him and understand that Tom just needs to warm up and adjust on his own time. They are really in love with him too and will provide him with a loving a stable home.

Sadly, there was a Springer in a shelter in SE Ga. with a broken leg. The shelter put him down the day of the night we were notified. These kinds of things make me very sad.

We just got notification of a young male Springer in a shelter near Augusta that we will be pulling tomorrow. He is heartworm positive and very skinny. No problem, we will nurse him back to health and get him a home where he will never have to worry about his next meal and never have heartworms again. His hair is so bleached out - he looks "orange". If anyone can foster him, please let me know. He is very people and dog friendly. He likes kids, but has not been cat tested.

Applications - we are continuing to get apps and Sandi, with the help of some great volunteers, is processing them quickly. It is nice, for a change, to have more apps than dogs. If any of you would like to help with vet checks, telephone interview and home checks - please let us know.

That's about it - thanks to all of you for rescuing your Springers - hug them tight.

Upcoming Events:

Hi All,

As you all know we had a great time and great success at last weekend's Springer Specialty Show in Lawrenceville. So maybe you are wondering what's in the works for the rest of the year; after all it is only January!

Well, we have lots of plans!

Here are some things in the pipeline in Georgia.  Details still need to be worked out on most of it and will be passed along as arranged, but this will give you an idea of what we have going on.  We had a great turnout at the Specialty Show and look forward to the same at these upcoming events.

Pawfest:

This is an annual event held at Rhodes Jordan Park (100 E. Crogan St.) in Lawrenceville, GA in May, hosted by the Gwinnett County Humane Society. We are planning to have a booth at this event this year and look forward to seeing you there.

Pet-a-Palooza:

We had a booth at this event which was held in Suwanee, GA last May. It was another very successful event for us. We hope to be part of this again this year. Stay tuned for more details.

Spring Garage Sale:

It's time to clean out those closets! And that garage! We will be holding a Spring Garage/Yard sale at the home of Carol Sanderson in Norcross; proceeds to go to ESRA. So start collecting items to donate.  I know we all have something to contribute to this one!

Summer get together and picnic:

This one is just for fun! Isaac & Vicky Dugan have graciously offered their home as a location for an ESRA get together and play date. The Dugans, who adopted Patrick last year, have 10 acres of fenced in land near the Georgia/Alabama state line, so this is one we can ALL get involved with. We are planning this event, likely for sometime in June or July. It will be a picnic style thing, with everyone pitching in on the eats and treats.

Dinner Auction:

We are also looking into having a ESRA dinner in the early fall for members and adopters, where we would include some fundraising possibilities, such as auction items, raffle, etc... So here again, be on the lookout for items that you can donate to the auction and if you have any catering contacts that might give us a good deal or if you have access to a club house or other spot that might make a good location for this event, we would certainly love to hear about it.

Animal Rescue Fair:

We were looking forward to being a part of this wonderful event held in Alpharetta each year; however this year's event has been cancelled.

Petsmart/Petco:

Eileen Parker has volunteered to look into getting ESRA Georgia signed up and involved with the regular adoption days events at Petsmart & Petco. Yea Eileen!!! Stay tuned. We will need volunteers to help man these events and plenty of Springer ambassadors to be on hand.

Dog Days at the Park:

Once again we would like to have some regular play days at dog parks in the coming year. We'd like to move it around to different parks, so if there is a park near you, please let us know.  We would also love to hear your suggestions on any of these events or any others you would like to see us participate in.

As always, we will be looking for volunteers to help out at all of these events. The good things is, we always have fun!

Please send your ideas and suggestions to one or more of the following folks (in Georgia):

Carol Sanderson gaevents@springerrescuegaal.org
Sandy Garris gaapps@springerrescuegaal.org

January 2008 - Rescue Parade in Gwinnett County, GA.

Hi Everyone,

This past weekend was the annual English Springer Spaniel Specialty Show in Lawrenceville, GA, hosted by the Chattahoochee English Springer Spaniel Club of Greater Atlanta. This event is loads of fun for all and this year was no different. Historically, the weather for this event is dreadful and this year was no exception. Exceeding the chilled rain of past years, this year brought in snow and sleet, which threatened to shut down the whole metro Atlanta area (while it may be pretty, we southerners are ill prepared for dealing with the icy aftermath and frozen roadways).

Still, this stalwart group of volunteers and adopters persevered and were rewarded with a very enjoyable and successful event for ESRA. AND our worst fears of the consequences of weather never materialized, as the wind came in prior to Saturday night's freeze, leaving the roadways safe and dry.

I'm not even going to attempt to name all the volunteers who made it to this wonderful event, but we were blessed with an amazing group of ESRA volunteers and adopters, not only from all over the metro Atlanta area , but also from the Georgia coast, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, North and South Carolina. What a wonderful group indeed!!!

I do want to make special mention of Barbara Welty our fearless leader and state coordinator whose excitement and energy kept everyone going, going, going; Carol Sanderson, our crafty Events Committee Chairperson; Becky Junkins and Beth Campbell who organized the Parade of Rescued dogs (Becky also provided the delicious taco soup and chicken soup to nourish and warm us at the same time) Sandi Garris, our sales lady extraordinaire; Sheila Connelly with her masterful grooming; Eileen Parker who stepped in everywhere and anywhere help was needed; David Latimer who was on hand to record this event photographically and Sue Schroer who did an absolutely awesome job of introducing our parade participants and sharing their personal stories with the show attendees. I am sure there was not a dry eye in the house as these beauties took their turn around the ring.

Many thanks to all those who attended and to all who made generous donations to our fantastic POR goody bags, home cooking and sale items.  We (ESRA) also took this opportunity to recognize all of the contributions and hard work of Dr. Joe Gaston, a local veterinarian and his clinics, in the care of ESRA dogs over the years, including several taking part in our POR. We would not be able to do what we do for these Springers without the help of the medical community and Dr. Gaston is a shining example of that help. Two gorgeous certificates (one for each clinic), created by Carol Sanderson, signed by Caryn Pola and Barbara Welty, and then beautifully framed by Mickey Creek were presented to Dr. Gaston prior to the Parade of Rescued Dogs.

I know the weather made it difficult or impossible for some to make it this year, but we did have a wonderful Parade of Rescued Dogs including the following participants: Sandy Danielson with Annie, Beverly Blair with Harry, Leslie Allen with Niles, Rebecca Latimer with Glory, Steven Bachmeyer with Bebop, Mickey & Marilyn Creek with Tony & Maggie, Dr. Susan Haight with Patches, Cindy & Katie Peterson with Gertie & Maddie, Pete & Ann Hall with Bosley & Mollie. And for all who could not make it this year - there's always next year. We look forward to seeing you there.

To top it all off, there are checks on the way to Suzanne totaling $2740!!!!! WOO WOOOOOOOO!

We also collected 8 used cell phones to be recycled (funds to go to ESRA) and sold 13 of David's "What's Cooking, Cuzzin?" art/cookbooks, (profits to go to ESRA).

And for the icing on the cake, Carol Sanderson won a wire crate as part of the raffle put on by the host club, which will be available for use by our local foster homes.

Please click here to view photos from this wonderful event, and keep checking for new photos being added over the next few days as they come in from additional participants.

Hi Everyone,

I am happy to report that our visit to Petsmart this past Saturday & Sunday for the Santa Claws pictures resulted in our hard working crew taking a total of 85 pictures for the event. This means that ESRA will be receiving a check from Petsmart in the amount of $425.00.

Our volunteers for the event were Kris Riha, who took on the part of Santa and did a marvelous job, Millie Christopher, Patty Howell, Traci  Manuel (and her springer Mollie), Angie Epling, Phyllis Chan and myself.  It was a fun time and we're looking forward to next year.

Petco Grand Opening in Cumming Georgia

We had a beautiful day and a marvelous turnout for our FIRST Petco event in Georgia yesterday. We had several interested potential adopters talk to us, so hopefully we will see some good applications come from this.  We also made $58.01 in donations and enjoyed each others company:-).

ESRA volunteers for this event were Beth & Walt Campbell, Sue Schroer, Ann Mansell (Ann's daughter & granddaughter also dropped by), Sandi Garris, Becky Junkins, Mickey Creek, Ray & Margie Carroll, Ray & Monica Smith and me:-).

Springer ambassadors for this event were marvelous, perfectly charming representatives of their breed: Millie & Duke Campbell, Lady Schroer, Beau Mansell, Max Watson, Charlie Carroll, Bailey Smith and fosters Tucker (formerly known as Tank) and Tony.  If I missed anyone, my sincerest apologies

Thanks to everyone who turned out and to Kelly Blake who hooked us up for this event. Kelly had a family emergency and was not able to make it, but we sure hope everything turned out well.

ESRA-GA/AL Team Members meet at Nationals 2007

The first weekend in October was a great time to be in Lexington, KY for "The Nationals".  Several of our ESRA-GA/AL team got together for the highly successful (and fun) ESRA dinner/auction event.  Then we enjoyed the show and rescue parade (sniff-sniff) the next day.  On Saturday evening the crew had dinner together to discuss how to organize our newly formed team.  Thanks to all who attended.
