Happy Endings

Just a few of the many successful adoption, thanks to our
wonderful group of volunteers:

March 5, 2010

Buster's Happy Ending:

Buster was left in a south Alabama shelter for unknown crimes.  Kim Matthews of Fairhope contacted the shelter and arranged for Buster to be sprung.  Since no foster homes were available Kim got resourceful and contacted a family she knew who were looking for a new family friend.  Enter the Butlers.  They agreed to foster Buster with the intent to adopt.  It was love at first sight and the entire Butler family adores Buster who is now known as Remy.  The adoption is final and you can see the spring in Remy's step....what a happy boy!  Thanks Kim for helping Remy get his second chance!

Annie's Happy Ending:

Annie was an owner turn in from Birmingham.  She had been living in a screened in porch area of the home, day and night, even in the cold.  The family contacted ESRA and Annie was flown from Birmingham to St. Petersburg by the Cucklers on Springer Air, and fostered by Pam Kemp.  She recently went to her forever home with the Wilkinsons in Richmond.  Not only has Annie seen the country, but she finally has the home she deserves.  Thanks to everyone who made this possible.

Trinity's happy Ending:

Trinity was one of Amber's pups pulled from the Arkansas shelter and was also fostered by Amelia Hudson and then by Bill and Robin Arnold.  She was recently adopted by Jim Howell in Huntsville, Al.  Jim and Trinity are enrolling in classes so that they can become a therapy team.  Thanks to Amelia, Bill and Robin, and to Claire Boone for helping overnight and transport Trinity to her new home!

Amber's Happy Ending:

Amber was one of 3 dogs pulled from an Arkansas shelter by Bill Arnold back in mid December and fostered first with Amelia Hudson and then by Bill and Robin Arnold.  She was adopted by the Roulo family in Illinois who had previously adopted MJ (an Alabama dog) also fostered by Bill and Robin.  Just look at this precious picture of Amber, now Pearl, and MJ or Miss Jiff.  Amber is the lemon/white.

This note is from Amber's new family: The family was together meeting her and our daughter in law made the comment she looked like a little Pearl and she responded with a tail wag so we all laughed and so it happened she is now Pearl.  It seems to put a smile on people's faces when they hear her name and that is just what Pearl needs to be surrounded with- smiles!

Wilson's Happy Ending:

Adoption Day for Wilson!

Thanks to Gail Kania for pulling him from Elmore County Shelter and fostering him.

A great way to start the year!

Duke's Happy Ending:

Here is Duke with his new family. And the note from his foster dad, Rick Welch who did an amazing job with this boy: "see attached pictures, they were such a sweet family, I think Duke is going to be extremely happy!   I didn't even cry....until after they left..."
Isn't it great to see Duke as part of a family? Enjoy! Susan

Tyler's happy Ending:

Tyler was adopted by the Skinners and then returned because he was just too much for them.  Then after a couple of days, they asked if they could try again and came up with a plan to make it work, including installing a new fence, erosion control & committing to training and doggy day care.  I am thrilled to announce that things are working out beautifully!  A note from his new parents: "Last night we ALL slept in the king size bed.  No problems!  This morning, the kids played". (Tyler and Bunzie)

Sam Gauntt's Happy Ending

Sam was adopted by Lance Gauntt  on May 10, 2008.  He was one of several Springers who, at fourteen months old, came into ESRA rescue from a situation where an owner had too many dogs to care for.  Since Sam was rescued from a very crowded situation where he did not get the human interaction that he needed, he was quite shy and unsure of himself around humans.  His foster parents, Beth and Walt Campbell brought Sam with them when they came to Lance's initial ESRA interview.  They bonded immediately.  Although  Sam did not know how to play or socialize, Lance is thrilled to report that he is now a happy, healthy well-adjusted best friend.  Their home in Sharpsburg Georgia borders a large wooded area where they take long walks, sometimes with a lab-mix named Angel who lives next door.  Some of Sam's favorite adventures are going to the dog park, hanging out at Starbucks. relaxing in the kiddie pool, standing on "squirrel patrol" and sleeping in the home office while Lance works.  Sam and Lance have brought the very best to each other's life!
**Lance and Sam participated in the 2009 Parade of Rescues at the Atlanta Springer Speciality Show.** (Two sharp lookin' guys!)

Sweet Pea's Happy Ending

Catherine and Herb Sandy adopted Sweet Pea on August 16th, 2008.  At seven years old, Sweet Pea had been turned into the Spaulding County Shelter in Georgia due to her owner's inability to afford her flea treatments.  A local rescue volunteer contacted ESRA and our volunteer spent almost a full day driving to the shelter and having her pulled, on to the vet's office and then to her foster home with Amy Schroer.   When the Sandy's met Sweet Pea, they just knew they were meant for each other.  She is their second ESRA dog and third Springer.  She has settled in quickly and has become a real joy.  Sweet Pea discovered by accident that she loves to swim and is an excellent retriever.  In addition her favorite things to do are walks around the neighborhood, sitting on the couch with Mom and Dad and barking at her arch enemy, the neighbor's gray cat.  Who could ask for more?

Sam Hudson's Happy Ending

Sam was adopted by Tom Hudson and family on October 25, 2008.  He lost his first home due to divorce.  His second family already had three dogs and could not give him the exercise and attention he needed so they turned him into ESRA.  Tracey Scholwalter became Sam's Foster Mom, and being a certified dog trainer, worked with this three year old on his adolescent behavior. He was a wonderful student, very enthusiastic and smart.   Sam now has a large yard in a quiet neighborhood in Lilburn  Georgia where he can run off leash very fast.  He also loves to play fetch.  The Hudsons have four granddaughters whom Sam likes to "herd" into one place so he can watch over them.  He is not happy unless he can see all of them.  He is gentle and good with all.  Life is looking up and although Sam still has a few issues to resolve, he is learning more each day.  His Mom and Dad think he is so special and one of a kind.  They are a perfect fit and think third time is definitely a charm!

Luke Burns Happy Ending

Luke was adopted by Shelly Burns on September 13, 2008.  He had been living on a farm chasing chickens with his brothers and sisters until his previous owner accidentally ran over his leg.  Soon after this, Luke was relinquished to ESRA for adoption.  Unfortunately Luke's leg did not heal properly and recently he has been found to have a severe case of hip displaysia and osteoarthritis.  He is scheduled for surgery next month.  But Luke's disability does not break his spirit or hold him back from trying to keep up with his Springer sister, Hannah.  Some days are harder than others but he is a true angel and you can rest assured there is never a dull moment with Luke around.  Shelly loves coming home everyday to be greeted by his sweet face and never ending energy, love and kisses.  She could not imagine life without her Luke.

Miss Pickles Happy Ending

Miss Pickles was adopted by Julia and Chad Lewis On December 6, 2008.  Pickles was one of two Kansas City puppy mill rescues placed in Georgia.  Because of the critical need, they were interested in fostering and not adopting.  But Pickles turned out to be the perfect dog for their family and she became their forever dog.  The Lewis family knew to expect that Pickles would have no social skills but after a tentative first night, she bonded right away with them.  Then shortly after she bonded with PJ, their other springer, who adores his new sister!    Pickles  "lack of social skills"  is offset by her enormous affection for humans and PJ.   She is very attuned to every nuance of her Mom and Dad's demeanor.   After a couple of "fish on a hook"  attempts on a leash, Pickles has calmed down and now loves going for walks right by her new family's side.  This is a happy beginning to another happy endings story!

Millie Storm's Happy Ending

Millie was adopted by Sandra Storm  in December of 2008.  She was one of the Kansas City puppy mill rescues placed in Alabama.  Because of the critical need, Sandra  was interested in fostering but Millie turned out to be the perfect addition for her dog family.   Sandra is a retired Circuit Court Judge who lives in Birmingham Alabama.  When Millie arrived at her home as a foster, she already had three dogs: Katie, a seventeen year old Springer who was adopted twelve years ago from the Humane Society; Justice, a seven year old field Springer who was adopted from ESRA at the age of seven weeks and Molly, a three year old lab/basset mix who was adopted two years ago from the Humane Society.  Do we see a pattern here?  All of the dogs enjoy the space of the one and a half acre yard where they are free to explore and play.  It was love at first sight for Sandra when she picked up eighteen month old Millie.  She had never seen a dog that adored running so much.  After the first day, there was no doubt that Millie had found her forever home.  She spends her days chasing squirrels, birds and anything else that moves.  She is a quick study and is now housebroken.  Millie is best described as sweet and smart and has a habit of sitting by Sandra's chair contently with her head and paw on Mom's feet.  Sandra tries not to think of Millie at the puppy mill, but knowing she WAS there, it fills her life with joy to watch her run free and happy!

Lilly Ann Hall's Happy Ending

Lilly Ann was rescued by ESRA volunteer Tracey Dexter from the Cleveland Mississippi animal shelter on May twenty first.  She was reportedly adopted from the shelter when she was a pup and then stayed with her military family until they moved and returned her to the shelter.  Their records indicate she was born on July twenty-fifth 2007. After being fostered initially by Tracey, she was fostered  by Amelia Hudson, also of Mississippi, who said that Lilly was playful but gentle especially for her age and size.  She was not quite a year old at that time and weighed fifty four pounds!  But in August, Lilly had the good fortune to move to St. Augustine Florida to live with Shelley Hall.  Lilly came to Shelley in the physical sense via ESRA but Shelley thinks it was really fate that brought them together.  She believes their story holds a happy ending for both of them.
In June of this year Shelley had to make the agonizing decision to put her 14 yr old Cocker Spaniel, Toby, to sleep. Toby was a laid back, versatile dog and went everywhere with Shelley. She was her companion through the happiest and the saddest times of her life. Shelley described Toby as the dog love of her life. When telling Toby goodbye, Shelley's 11 year old neighbor, David, described her perfectly saying, “Toby, you are a very good dog”.
Shelley knew that after Toby was gone, she would want another dog and, she knew it would not take long to be ready. Since she loved the water, a water-loving female dog was definitely her preference.  She was easily sold on Springers and she had also decided to adopt a rescue dog. Shelley started her search on the Internet and the ESRA web site.  She found Lilly’s face totally irresistible when she saw her on the web site. She had made a couple of other inquiries but, they did not pan out and now she knows why!  Fate intervened!
Lilly bonded instantly with her neighbor David and now they think they belong to each other. Her best friends are David’s two dogs, Shadow (two) and Spirit (six months). They play chase and tug of war and love to gnaw on each other daily. They come to Shelley's yard to play and Shelley and Lilly go to their house for dinner often. Lilly's other best friend is Zoe (four). Zoe’s Mom is Shelley's best friend and they have a pool and a lake with a dock (but, that’s not why they love them of course!). The lake is where Lilly got her first swimming lesson. She acted like she'd never seen water before, other than what was in her water bowl but, with a little coaxing she quickly realized she was a Springer and started swimming. Now Shelley can not keep her away!
Lilly has a few nicknames-Silly Lilly, Lilith, and her Mom's favorite, Lilly Liver Lips. She’s a smart, personable, beautiful dog.   Shelley says that you know you have a great dog when you're complimented three times in the parking lot of a convenience store within five minutes.  Lilly never meets a stranger.  She loves everyone and in return, is loved by everyone.   She's also a very silly dog and already knows exactly when Shelley needs to laugh. But, Lilly is very structured too, which is conveniently  something Shelley says she needed. She does not let her hit the “snooze” button more than twice in the mornings so now Shelley actually makes it to work on time. Lilly meets her at the foot of the bed with a big "vocal" yawn, that still makes her laugh every morning. Lilly brings toys and leashes when she’s ready to play or walk and when she’s ready for bed, she throws herself onto her bed and moans like an old lady. She does not quite get why the old cat that hangs out back is not amused by her antics but, she still brings him toys anyway. She’s persistent and sometimes even hard-headed but, Shelley says she loves her more every day. Lilly is more to her than she ever imagined or expected after losing Toby. Shelley says that deciding to adopt her was the best decision she could have ever made and she may even consider adopting a sister for Lilly to play with in the future.   Now that is a happy ending for two!

Lily Ann update – June 18, 2009

Hi Barbara -

Lilly & I are both doing great!! It's very nice to hear from you.  We've stayed busy in the back yard the last few months.  We discovered a wonderful thing called MULCH and have spread over 20 yards. FUN! Our back yard has pretty much become the canine romper room of the neighborhood. My friends say I should open a doggy day care. It's not unusual for Lilly to have three or four friends over at a time. She's quite popular ... (-:

Here are some of her latest pictures! She's such a good girl and so full of herself.

Percy Hayward's Happy Ending

You may remember Randy.  He had just celebrated his second birthday in July when  his owner died suddenly and the family brought him to their local animal shelter.  A  rescue worker contacted ESRA and he was placed in foster care.  On September thirteenth,  Randy left his foster Mother, Beth in Atlanta Georgia.  He arrived on the September fourteenth in Cape May, New Jersey to begin his new life as Percy.  His new parents, Lynn and Joy Hayward say that it seems like Percy  has lived with them all of his life.   They bonded from the very beginning.  Lynn was born in England, close to Cambridge and grew up with Springers.  He and Joy have had several Springers since they married.  After their last Springer died, their house seemed very empty.  At first they wanted to buy another show quality dog, but Joy had investigated the Springer Rescue organization, and  had read the stories about the dogs, and they felt that they should adopt a dog and give one of them a second chance.  Lynn says that maybe because he is a little too British, the name Randy did not seem quite dignified enough, so they decided to call  him Percy, after Sir Percy Blakney (the Scarlet Pimpernel). As you will see from his photos, he is quite the handsome boy.  Percy is also a loving guy that just wants to be with Lynn and Joy all the time-that is until promptly at nine thirty  when he heads back to the bedroom to go to sleep.  Well, he is tired.  He spends every day going on a three mile walk, stopping only to observe the many compliments he receives.  He also loves his fenced in backyard and all the surrounding wildlife. But most of his time is spent with Lynn and Joy on their boat or in his most favorite thing, the Jeep.   He just loves to ride in the Jeep! Percy  attended his first family party where there were lots of different people and four other furry friends.  Lynn and Joy say that Percy was by far the most well behaved and was admired by all.  (Can you say proud parents?)     He is quite a character and has exceeded their expectations.  Sometime in the future Lynn and Joy will be looking to get him another Springer for a companion.  They also say that everyone in ESRA have been very thoughtful and responsible in the adoption process and more than helpful.  They feel that the work they do is great and  they really care .  They also want to thank Foster Mom Beth for all of her help and follow up contact.
The Hayward family did not just give Percy a new name but they also gave him a new happy ending life!

Katie Sconyers Happy Ending
Adopted – August 5, 2008

The Alabama girl becomes a South Carolina beach girl!  Deborah and John Sconyers drove over to the lake country of Alabama to meet foster parents Millie and Craig Christopher and their foster dog, Katie.  Millie rescued Katie from the Cullman Alabama Animal Shelter.  After a  most hospitable evening, followed by morning tears, Katie came home to South Carolina on August fifth.  Deborah's birthday is August sixth.  What a gift!  She is the second ESRA adoption for the Sconyers.
Katie is loving and being loved in South Carolina!  She enjoys running on the dog friendly beach on Hilton Head Island.  She is great on the boat and has better sea legs than most boating guests-leaning over and taking a lot of interest in the dolphins passing by.  She also likes to go to Oyster Roasts to benefit the humane shelter at the Sconyer's favorite dog friendly restaurant, where she meets and plays with other dogs.   Katie is currently entered in the local paper, The Island Packet's pet calendar contest.  She is a big Mama's girl but thoroughly enjoys her morning walks with Daddy.  Every day of the Sconyer's life is made better because of Katie.  Yes, she snores and follows you from room to room and climbs up on the sofa and has to get as close as possible to you,but do you know any Springer who is different and who would want them to be?  The Sconyers are so happy and thank ESRA for the great job all the volunteers do.  They also want all the folks in Alabama to know that Katie may now be a South Carolina girl, but she will always be a Crimson Tide fan!

Adopted – July 23, 2008
Bailey Gordon's Happy Ending

Bailey, a beautiful tri colored boy was left at the Catoosa Georgia county shelter by his owners.  He was rescued by GAAL on July eleventh and following foster care was adopted by the Gordon family of five on July twenty-third.  They say that  Bailey is the love of their life and that he has brought their family  much joy .   At least once a day they talk about how lucky they are to have him.  He has energized their much older springer, Rosie, who prior to Bailey's arrival, had been mourning the loss of their Keeshond/Chow mix, Oscar, who went to Rainbow Bridge earlier in the summer.  Now Rosie and Bailey play every morning.  The Gordons and their three daughters think that Bailey has the most adorable personality!  Truly  from the first day Bailey moved in with them, he became an important part of the family.  He gives them many daily occasions to laugh because of his mischievous fun-loving antics.  The Gordon family will be forever grateful to ESRA for providing them with this awesome addition to their family.

Jake Laird's Happy Ending

Jake has been transformed from a Georgia city boy to a Florida beach bum!  Two year old Jake was found wandering the streets of Georgia in March with his Jack Russell Terrier friend when they were picked up by animal control and found themselves in a high kill shelter in Commerce, Georgia.  Kathie Devaney from the shelter contacted Barbara Welty and thank goodness for ESRA stepping in and rescuing Jake. After a little grooming by Marilyn Gorman , he was taken in and fostered by Leslie Allen who said that Jake was such a wonderful companion and she would have loved to keep him herself but for the fact that she already had three.
Jake shares his new home with his parents, Annette and Tom Laird  and two Springer siblings. Molly is a twelve year old liver and white female and Oreo is a five year old black and white male. The Laird's were devastated after they lost their eight year old black and white male Springer, Joseph, suddenly in February.  He had been diagnosed with Lymphoma cancer in January.  Joseph was also a rescue from a high kill shelter in Orlando and he shared their home for a short but wonderful five years as an ESRA foster where he was not only a great guy but a working companion to Tom. The two of them were inseparable. After his death, Annette found herself on the ESRA web site looking to find another Springer that could use a loving home. Tom said if they got another Springer, he wanted one with a thick chubby face like Joseph but his heart hurt too much to get another dog immediately.  He said someday he would be ready. So one day when Tom was in Jacksonville on business, Annette was on the ESRA web site again and she found Jake!  He was just so beautiful with his face full of freckles that made you just want to kiss it and his description spoke of a very laid back personality.  Annette told her husband about Jake and sent him a photo. Tom replied  he would drive to Atlanta just to meet him and Tom will tell you it was love at first site!. Another couple was scheduled to meet Jake before the Lairds, which disappointed them quite a bit, but it turned out that they were not the match for Jake. Annette and Tom were both nervous and overjoyed when they found out he was still available.  Now Jake and Tom are inseparable and of course he loves his new mommy too! The Laird family knew the minute they met Jake for the first time he had that perfect Springer face to love, spoil and kiss. He loves going to work and traveling by car with his new dad. Jake is Tom's shadow.  When Jake is at home he truly lives a beach lifestyle. The Lairds live in Madeira Beach Florida, which is a quaint  beach community. There is  a board walk with a lot of gift shops and restaurants and they take all of their Springers for a walk on that board walk quite often.  Many of the tourist's stop and ask to have their pictures made with them and the Laird's use that opportunity to tell people about ESRA and how wonderful the Springer breed really is. They also have a sandy beach right behind their house that the dogs get to enjoy every weekend. They all love to swim and fetch balls and sticks, as you can see in the attached photos.   Then  it's on to their weekly bath time. The results are a really tired bunch of Springers. They can't keep their eyes open at night after their busy day. That's what makes this family's heart happy- a bunch of happy and content Springers. They are Annette and Tom's furry children and the JOY of their lives.  The Lairds thank ESRA again for all they do and for Jake's Happy Ending!

Sydney has been adopted !

Sydney and her sibling were found by a good Samaritan in horrible condition on the side of the road. Unfortunately her sibling did not survive, but thanks to the wonderful staff at Oakwood Animal Hospital, Sydney has bounced back completely.  She is a typical curious, energetic girl; she enjoys classical music on the radio and playing with lots of toys. She has begun her educational journey, learning housetraining, proper play, interaction with people and dogs, and (most importantly) how to wrap her family around her little paws!

Sydney was adopted on 8/30/08, and went home with her forever mom, Jeanne, who reports that they feel blessed to have been chosen for Sydney (even though her Springer brother, Chance, is still getting used to the idea).

September 1, 2008

Connor was adopted Sunday and now lives in the Atlanta area with another Springer and several children (Connor is laying down in the photo). Everyone is thrilled with the new arrangement, including Connor.

Connor was abandoned in rural Georgia; though he had a microchip it had never been registered so he could not be traced back to his family. When no one claimed him he came into foster care with ESRA about two weeks ago. He has wonderful manners, plays well with others, and was perfect in so many ways. With a full tail he could really show his enthusiasm, and his new Springer brother has a tail as well so they're a matching pair.

Connor was fostered by first-time foster mom Diane Cooper in Athens. Diane doesn't have a Springer herself (she has a King Charles Cavelier spaniel) but got interested in fostering through a neighbor who helps with a local rescue group and by stories about my fosters. She did wonderful with Connor. Way to go, Diane!

Sadie (Ginny) finds LOVE!

All,

We adopted Sadie (aka Ginny) almost a month ago, and she is the belle of the ball at our home.  Sully and Sadie are like long lost friends running, swimming and barking at the postman.  Sully never did that before.  Sadie has this ability to multitask.  She can pop a squat to pee and turn her body in a 360 degree turn without breaking stream, just keeping everyone in her sites.  She is one wired Springer.  We love her dearly.

June 9, 2008

Maggie II (now Bella) finds her forever family!  You may recall, almost a month ago, there was a plea for a foster home for Maggie II.  Apparently she had some issues with the resident Springer at her foster home, so we needed a place with no other dogs, which is kind of tough to find in a group of rescue volunteers.

While walking Maggie in my neighborhood, we met my neighbors Don & Patricia, and of course, their dog Tess (a flat coated retriever) came out to see what was going on.  Don and Patricia were so taken with Maggie that they asked if they could foster her, saying it would be a good test since they have a dog and a cat.

You guessed it – within 2 days they fell in love and asked if they could adopt her!

Their cat is named Maggie; and they said it got too confusing telling “Maggie to stop chasing Maggie around the house”; so they renamed her Bella – “because all the Queens of Spain were named Isabella”.  Well, Bella has settled in nicely with her new family and now Maggie the cat has 2 dogs that she bathes on a regular basis.  Bella is very smart and has quickly learned the rules of her new household.  She has also learned the joys of gardening.  Her new mom wrote:  “She really is a lovely little thing, happy and affectionate and no trouble.  We are so glad we got her.”

The best part is that I get to see her a lot; and she remembers me and is always so excited to see me!

Marley is Home!!

Hi Nita.  I'd like to begin by letting you know that there are not enough happy words in the whole universe to describe our little Marley!  He is happiness, laughter, joy, sunshine, smiles, curiosity, mischief & love all wrapped up in a darling little package with a constantly wagging tail!  His pink, white & brown nose is ALWAYS leading the rest of him towards some new & delicious smell.  He loves lots & lots of hugs & kisses from everyone except Ralphy, Lexxy & Fluffy(ha,ha)  He already knows his name, has his most favorite toys (several of them) & is completely potty trained.  He loves to eat anything he can find outside, so he is never alone out there.  He loves to eat wires, wood tables & shoes of all kinds, so he is never alone inside, either.  He also loves to eat!  Loves his food, treats & toast in the morning...(sorry guys, but he loves it!)  Also, Cheerios!  Vet says it is OK.  In a nutshell, Marley is our happy, healthy son that we are truly blessed to have found.  P.S.  Did I mention how smart he is?  Dr. B. (his vet), even agrees!  Sincerely, Ron & Susan G

Sweetie's finally found her 'forever' home.

I think Bob fell in love all over again, and frankly it was a toss-up who was more anxious to keep her - my brother or my father!  I'm attaching a couple of photos of Bob and his dog.

Sweetie will now go to live up on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia, with lots of new smells and interesting birds and animals to chase. Looking at her now, it's hard to believe what a sick little girl she was.  Many thanks to you, to Leslie Paulsen and to the team at Crabapple Knoll for helping to care for this lovely - and loving - dog.

Best,
Marilyn

 Update on Ziggy (now Lucy)

Hi everyone,

Ziggy is doing so well! She has made herself right at home. She very much enjoyed Elyse's first birday party last Saturday (with 27 people including five little kids). She went person to person all evening and was loved on by all! We currently have a houseguest, my in-law's dog Shelby, and she and Ziggy are getting along great. They play together and Shelby has done a good job getting Ziggy to go down the basement steps to the doggy door on her own.

Thanks and will keep you posted on her progress!
