There are several ways to help us help Springers in Georgia and Alabama:
There are even more Ways to Help. Check them out at: http://www.springerrescue.org/help.html If you would like to help
locally, please contact us via:
info@springerrescuegaal.org. Fostering a Springer in need can be a very rewarding experience. You get to personally be involved with seeing a neglected or abandoned boy or girl blossom into a confident, loving, healthy and happy companion that will make a fine new family member to someone special. Truth be told most of the Springers coming into foster care in our organization are already happy little creatures, despite their situation. Springers come into our organization in need of foster care for many reasons. Some are picked up as strays or come from shelters. These are often the needier fosters. They may need medical attention; they may need some training; primarily they need tender loving care, a home environment and affection. Some of our Springers come to us from homes that can no longer care for them for any number of reasons. These dogs are usually healthy, may require a little training, but again, primarily need love and understanding. Some dogs need more time than other; a typical foster care situation is a couple of weeks. However, in some cases, where medical care is needed, the foster term may be a bit longer. Fostering is one of the most vital components of this organization. It allows us the opportunity to observe each dog in a family environment, evaluate him or her for the best possible adoption match. And it gets that Springer out of the shelter environment to safety. Fostering is not for everyone, it does require patience and love and time. If you have some of those ingredients handy, please consider becoming a foster home for ESRA. We will be glad to answer all your questions and concerns. For more information, please see our National Website – ESRA FOSTER CARE PROGRAM http://www.springerrescue.org/join/foster.html where you will also find an online Foster Home Application. You may also contact our state coordinators: Alabama – Angie Epling, alcoord@springerrescuegaal.org; Georgia, Louisiana & Mississippi – Barbara Welty, gacoord@springerrescuegaal.org. For other states, please see our national listing of regional rescue coordinators at http://www.springerrescue.org/coordinators.html.
Transporting is a wonderful way to pitch in and help. The Georgia an Alabama region of ESRA takes in Springers from all over these two states. We also work in close coordination with Mississippi & Louisiana ESRA as well as other surrounding states. Sometimes these Springers in need are hundreds of miles from the care that they can received once they are in the care of ESRA. For that reason, we are always looking for volunteers that can help get our Springers from one area to another. These transports often take on the look of a relay, with one driver picking up a dog and driving him or her an hour or two down the road to the next driver, and so on until this pup is in his or her new foster home. Other times, a transport may be to pick up a dog from a shelter and take him to a vet 30 miles away. This is a great way opportunity for someone who would like to help out but does not have the recourses for fostering and has limited time available. Transports may be for any day of the week, may be long or short, may be one dog or half a dozen dogs. Transports are also very personally rewarding. When you pick up a dog from the shelter and take him or her to safety… well, that is a very good feeling, indeed. If you would like to volunteer to help out on occasion with transporting for ESRA in Georgia or Alabama, please contact Nita Watson – transport@springerrescuegaal.org.
Georgia and Alabama each have a great active group of volunteers and there is nearly always something going on. Some events are strictly social like dog park outings and picnics designed to let the dogs and their families get together and play and swap stories. There is always a large supply of dog stories and here you will find a group of people who are ready to listen to yours. There are also events designed to raise funds for the care of our fosters or to increase awareness of rescue and our organization. We are always looking for help with these events. They include events like yard sales or dinner auctions; booths at dog shows or other public pet events. Even the working events are a lot of fun and we would welcome your help.
You would be amazed at the number of English Springer Spaniels find themselves in need of loving homes through no fault of their own. In 1999, ESRA assisted with the rescue and rehoming of 75 Springer Spaniels. That number has grown every year since to over 100 Springers assisted by ESRA every year for the past three years. If you are ready to adopt a Springer of your own, check out our national ESRA website for more information on adopting, www.springerrescue.org, and fill out our online adoption application at http://www.springerrescue.org/adopt/adopt.html. Not sure if you are ready to adopt? Perhaps you would like to consider becoming a Foster Home.
